Searching for my blog's formatting

I love that minimalist design of this platform. Anyone can bring a new blog online with a few clicks, chose a minimalist theme and simply write.

But with Markdown as the central formatting environment, there are a few options that help emphasize the main points, increase readability (or skimmability, for that matter) and close the gap between minimalist and boring.

There are the obvious options to write in italic, bold or a combination of both.

There are also quotes

and

inline code blocks that change the font

and

different levels

of headlines

with H3 being an option for writing an emphasized paragraph or really stressing a key point.

But there is also the highlighter option, which seems to do basically the same as writing something in bold letters.

So now I struggle with figuring out how and when to best utilize those formatting options.

Italic for my own annotations? Or for direct speech? Or for central terminology that might be unknown to the reader? Or to emphasize certain words, just as I would when saying them out loud?

Bold for the parts of my sentences that should really not be missed? For key points? Or is this what I want to use the highlighter for? I like it better than bold, but it's more in your face, so to speak. I really like to write in a way that makes my texts easy to highlight. So this is the part I want to figure out most urgently.

Any ideas, tipps or ressources on that? Can you maybe point to a blog that figured this out in a tasteful way?
